Happy Friday to you.
It’s a miserable wet morning here so I’m pleased to be indoors writing to you. Hopefully the weather is better where you are 🙂
Every time I teach a kettlebell class, personal client or go through my own workout I perform a little Core/Abs activation circuit before I really get down to business.
All my class participants and clients always say they have a much better workout if I get there abs / core muscles firing before we start.
Here’s my 2.5-Minute Abs Activation Circuit:
- Slow Mountain Climbers
- Side Plank Left
- Cross Body Mountain Climbers
- Side Plank Right
- Bridge
Here are the videos of the above exercises:
Just perform each exercise for 30 seconds with no rest in between. One circuit is all you need.
The objective here is not to totally fatigue your core, that would be a bad idea before your main workout because you need your core muscles to support your spine.
So, if you find this circuit too demanding then perform each exercise for less time or reduce the amount of exercises.
Once you have finished your main workout then you can hit your core/abs harder. You could repeat the circuit above for more time or choose more demanding exercises.
To help you with your core / abs training I wrote down my favourite core workouts. Each workout only lasts 4 minutes but gets progressively harder.
See my 37 Core / Abs Workouts here
That way you can use a nice easy one, say workout 8 above, as your warm up and a much harder workout afterwards to finish.
So here’s how your session may look:
- Warm Up & Mobility
- Core Activation Circuit (as above)
- Main Workout
- Core Finishing Workout (as above but harder)
- Cool Down
- Cold Shower
- Feel amazing and pleased with yourself
I think you will really notice the benefits from a short core activation circuit like the one above.
Give it a try and let me know how you get on.

Have a great weekend,
