7 Guiding Principles for a Healthy Life

By Greg Brookes

Healthy living does not need to be complicated.

All the great things in life take time and consistency.

Small daily habits add up to large changes in the future.

Over the years I’ve changed workouts and my diet but my basic principles aways stay the same.

Here are the 7 principles that I follow daily to get the best out of my life:

1 Mobilise what’s Restricted, Stretch what’s Tight

If you have a tight chest then you should stretch your Pec muscles. If you lack movement in your upper back then you should mobilise it.

2 Do the Most Important Things First

I start my day by writing, that is the most important thing to me right now. I start my workouts with Pulling exercises because they matter the most to me. I put my wife first because she is the most important person to me.

3 Keep Stress Levels Down

I avoid confrontation at all costs, I take a deep breath and move on. Caffeine is kept to a minimum. Avoid sugar. Quiet time and relaxation is a daily activity. Lights are kept low in the evenings.

4 Stick to the 6 Basic Movement Patterns: Squat, Lunge, Deadlift, Push, Pull, Core

The human body is only designed to move in a number of ways so I do not force other movements just because they are trendy. I only concentrate on what really matters and stick to the fundamentals.

5 Eat Live Foods, Avoid Dead Foods

No matter what your persuasion on nutrition everyone agrees that vegetables give the body life. Eat seasonally to get the most nutrients.

Go organic to avoid eating chemicals. Avoid food made in a factory that is dead and takes more energy away from you than it gives. Drink more water!

6 Get Outside Daily and Connect with Nature

We are nature. We come from nature. Life always feels good when you get outside and connect with nature. Go for a walk. Dig the garden. Paddle in a stream. Swim in the sea. Feel the grass between your toes.

7 Get to Bed Early

I’m usually in bed by 10pm. I wake up early. Don’t over stimulate your brain just before bed. Turn off the TV. Read a book. Keep lights low. Wind down. We all sleep a lot less than we used to, so get more sleep.

These are my 7 guiding principles. They have not changed for the last 10 years. If ever I feel I’m losing sight due to information overload I look back at my principles and they ground me again.

That’s all for today, I hope you found this useful.

Take care

Greg
