How Often to Exercise

By Greg Brookes

Happy Sunday to you.

Lucy and I have just been for a beautiful family roast dinner, thanks Mom if you’re reading this.

Anyways, lets get onto exercise frequency…

Exercise and movement is important but often enthusiasm and good intentions can get the better of us.

Here’s a guide on how often to exercise…

A few simple rules:

  • Depending on your nutrition, age, experience and genetics you’ll find that you may need to rest less or more than others.
  • The more intense your workout the less you need to exercise each week. Intense workouts really deplete your body’s resources and require more repair than regular workouts.

So based upon the above factors you will probably fit into one of the below weekly exercise routines:

1) Monday, Wednesday, Friday

A good place to start for any newcomers to exercise. Take Tuesday, Thursday and the Weekend off.

2) Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday

This is the routine that tends to suit me best. I use short and intense workouts that last a maximum of 15 minutes so I find I need the Wednesday and Weekend off to recover.

3) Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

This format works for moderate workouts each day or alternating between interval based cardio and weight training with the weekend off.

The most important thing is to listen to your body. If you find that you have no enthusiasm for exercise, feel excessive muscular soreness or are suffering from illness then it’s time to add another days rest.

Remember that exercise causes damage to the body and just like healing from any injury the body needs time to rest and repair itself!

OK, that’s all for today, have a great Sunday and enjoy your day.

Take care and happy exercising,

Greg
